NMIX 2020
NMIX 2020 is the introductory class for the New Media Certificate program. I took this class in the Fall of 2020. Below are a few of the projects I worked on during my time in this course.
Utopia/Dystopia Project
For this project my classmates and I were tasked with striving to understand and explain “various new media technologies and topics by exploring both all the amazing things that technology could lead to (Utopia) and all the horrible things that could come from it (Dystopia).” Our class was broken up into groups and each group was assigned either Utopia or Dystopia along with a topic and time period. My group was chosen to do Amazon Utopia in the year 2030.
Within our groups, students were tasked with designating one person in their group for each of the following positions.
| Project coordinator | Works with everyone in the group to coordinate everything that happens into a single, cohesive project |
| Research coordinator | Working with project coordinator, divvies up, coordinates, and pulls together research |
| Researcher | Carries out and reports back project research |
| Online thing coordinator | Responsible for ultimate success of the online thing. Coordinates research, original thought, and more |
| Online thing editor | Responsible for final quality of written portion of online thing |
| Online thing writer | There might be more than one of these. Responsible for writing a portion of the online thing |
| Video presentation creative director | Responsible for pulling together the entirety of the video presentation |
| Video presentation producer | Responsible for coordinating the logistics of the video production process (who’s filming / creating what when, editing, etc.) |
| Video presentation talent | Acts in the video, records a voiceover, creates graphics, etc. |
| Director of fun | Adds fun to all of the above |
For my group, I was assigned the task of serving as the project coordinator. My jobs included tasks such as taking meeting notes, arranging meeting times, ensuring all deliverables were completed, and coordinating communication among group members. In addition to this role, I also served as a researcher and online thing editor. Because of the scope of this project, many times roles overlapped with each other, which allowed members of our group to help with all aspects of the project!
The next requirements for this project were to create an online artifact and a presentation video showcasing our ideas and knowledge about our topic. Below are the results of my team’s efforts to demonstrate what we learned.

What I Took Away
By taking NMIX 2020, I learned a TON about what it means to be involved with and understand New Media. This course helped me to understand that new media is something I am interested in. Additionally, through this class I was able to work on skills such as professionalism, videography, web development, and team work.
